On Radio 4’s In Our Time this week, Melvyn Bragg and his guests discussed the Essays of Michel de Montaigne, the French Renaissance statesman, writer, and philosopher, regarded by many as the inventor of the personal essay who had a lot to write about just everything, no matter how mundane or embarrassing, wanted us to strive to know ourselves and to live well, and brought some good ol’ common sense to the age of reason.
