Former porn star Bree Olson nails the bullsh*t way we view female sexuality (huffingtonpost.com).
“To all the young women thinking about doing porn; I didn’t find Jesus. I don’t hate porn. I didn’t have any bad experiences. But trust me when I tell you not to do it.”
For sure, you may be thinking regarding regrets and laments of the adult industry but not so; her advice regards the discrimination a woman will likely experience when she tries to leave it.
“When you do porn you automatically become a segregated part of society that is held to prejudice without the support of activists for your human rights. Porn isn’t bad—how people will treat you for the rest of your life is.”
With more than a few I’d guess as keen to put her down and “slut-shame” even while they watch it. Even Charlie Sheen was keen to correct all that she was now a “former” porn star when he took her aboard his Violent Torpedo of Truth bandwagon and briefly made her one of his no-longer-porn “goddesses”.
Bree is upfront in asserting it was her choice, seemingly unlike the many—like formally vocally porn advocating Sasha Grey— with tales of coercion when they leave—although perhaps without CIA ex-lovers luring them into porn (tmz.com,m Oct. 2014).
“I made a choice. I chose the sex industry. … I know how to capitalize from my name and will always be able to work for myself in some form so I’m not concerned, but that doesn’t mean I think it’s okay. It’s not okay, [and] women that have done porn are not lesser than.”
Except perhaps, it must be said, for those for whom they take on that role as part of the fantasy feature, but inflating ego as well as anything else is one thing but…
“Even more troubling is the fact that shunning adult performers is a logical result of how society views female sexuality. ‘Sluts’ aren’t tolerated in ‘respectable’ society, and porn stars—who unapologetically make money for having sex—are the ultimate sluts.”
Not tolerated, but searched for a lot along with pussy and nipple slip of a helluva lot of female celebs to call “disgusting” as perused. It’s not just men that indulge in slut-shaming though: Karen Mangiacotti on Kim Kardashian West’s bedunk balencing champagne glass Breaking the Internet (huffingtonpost.com, Nov. 2014).
“Interestingly, criticism was mostly a by women, about women kind of thing. Women don’t like it when naked ladies go mainstream.”
For sure—well, as sure as you can be during a Twitter backlash— seemingly supporting Lily Allen’s “it’s more of a competitive thing” supposedly misquoted feminist comments as guest editor of Shortcut last year (Pick of the Week 12th March 2014).
You can read Bree’s letter—and the comments on it—in full here on Twitter.
Of Ukrainian descent but born in Houston, Texas and growing up in Indiana, the now 28-year-old Bree Olson entered the adult industry as a petite blonde at 20 in 2006, her chosen stage name came from the first name of a high school friend combined with a variation on the last name of the hugely popular at the time Olsen twins.
Initially working for a variety of companies including Digital Playground, Elegant Angel and Red Light District Video, standing at 5 foot 3 inches with a 32D cup, her vernal-looks and appeal proved so popular that she became a contract performer with Adam and Eve (the largest distributor of adult novelties and movies) in 2008 and scooped, among others, AVN Best New Starlet and Best Anal Sex Scene, XRCO New Starlet and Cream Dream, F.A.M.E. Favorite Female Rookie, and XBIZ New Starlet of the Year awards. Named by Maxim as one of the 12 top female stars in porn in 2010, from 2006 to 2011 she would go on to perform in over 280 adult films.
Although not yet to fully grasp the porn-to-mainstream Holy Grail, in 2010 she appeared in an episode of the E! reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians (egotastic.com), not as proof that it is scripted, as if any one actually doubted it, but being hired as a nanny by Bruce to teach momager Kris a lesson seeing her nanny walking around the house half-naked.
In 2011 she briefly moved in with actor Charlie Sheen and became one of his several porn “goddesses” during his post-Two and a Half Men firing Violent Torpedo of Truth tour and seemingly retired from the porn industry, for “as long as I’m with Charlie” she suggested, but only days later Sheen tweeted that Olson had “left the building” and that, “We’re sad… Over it… Applications now being accepted” only to retract that two hours later tweeting “She’s back.”. It was suggested her mother was worried about her daughter’s relationship, but Olson stated she was content with the arrangement and opined that men should be allowed to live with as many women as they wanted. It was all over by April though, moving out for the last time, she apocalyptically tweeted“Don’t cross me If so I’ll butcher u brutally in my hotel bed & dispose of the body. I’ll just tell house keeping I was having a heavy flow.”.
But regardless, she had seem to have retired from porn from that point on, much missed by many, but moved on a role in Tom Six’s polemic horror movie The Human Centipede 3 (Final Sequence) and sketch and improv comedy on TV, starting a Kickstarter campaign back in March this year to cover the production costs of her web series Bree DOES Comedy.
And that makes Bree Olson this week’s porn star pick.
