‘Batwoman’ shocker: Ruby Rose exits CW drama ahead of Season 2 (

A shot of Ruby Rose from the Batwoman series with the caption: “I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season.”

With the series forced to end its season early due to the coronavirus pandemic and sadly that not just being Bruce Wayne’s Jewish lesbian woke crusader cousin getting two in her coot, one in her boot in the series finale.

The announcement Tuesday — two days after the show's season finale — leaves the series without a lead actress for the time being. A timeline for a new actress to take over the historic role has yet to be determined. Batwoman was renewed for a second season in January, along with 12 other scripted series on The CW, and was set to anchor the network's Sunday night starting in early 2021.

“Historic” in that it was the first live-action TV series to feature a lesbian superhero as its protagonist, but found itself review-bombed victim to the sort of a post-truth era’s alt-istic toxic fan culture unable to handle a female heroine lead and a queer one at that (, Oct. 2019) and with Rose facing a backlash when casting was first announced which drove her off perpetually toxic Twitter, in part due to media representing her as the lesbian James Dean face of LGBTQ and “go gay” for Ruby comments which ironically for the gender-fluid actress drew as much admonishment for “not gay enough” from those within that community (Wikipedia).

“I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season," said Rose. "This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles. I am beyond appreciative to Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Caroline Dries for not only giving me this incredible opportunity, but for welcoming me into the DC universe they have so beautifully created. Thank you Peter Roth and Mark Pedowitz and the teams at Warner Bros. and The CW who put so much into the show and always believed in me. Thank you to everyone who made season one a success — I am truly grateful.”

But with CW, Warner Bros. TV and Berlanti Productions eager to state that they “look forward to sharing its new direction, including the casting of a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ+ community, in the coming months.”

New Batwoman revealed: Javicia Leslie is Ryan Wilder (

Leslie isn’t taking over the Kate Kane role from Ruby Rose, but instead will play a brand new character, the mysterious Ryan Wilder.

Sharing the LGBTQ+ credentials of Rose’s character but the presumably this time gay enough German-born bisexual actress adding another first aptly being at a time of street protests the first black caped crusader thus described in the official character description:

Ryan Wilder is about to become Batwoman. She’s likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the Batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today Ryan lives in her van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical all-American hero.

But doubtless trouble waiting when said plant’s gayness is vitriolically debated on Twitter.
